I have just finished Logan and I loved it but I'm a bit confused?

So I've never really been a massive fan of the X-Men films. I enjoyed Origin: Wolverine but never really sat down and watched the other 8 films. Now however after seeing Logan I feel inclined to dive deeper into the story. However I'm completely lost at where to start? I understand there are a lot of inconsistencies throughout the series and I can deal with that but I'd love to know what order to watch the films in. The whole "alternate timeline" thing is throwing me off.
